The photo was supplied by Fabian Mamare who was one of those ‘Barracks kids’ born in Wewak and grew up at Moem before relocating to Goldie prior to the Independence.
I have just been looking at the site before attending the reunion in October and some of these photos bring back great memories. I do remember swamping the army boat and losing the outboard motors (also a fruit cake which my mother had taken the trouble to send for my birthday). I would like to get in touch with Russell Jenkin who is in the photo with me outside the Sergeants’ Mess.
Toddy and Clapper Jenkins, do you remember taking an assault craft to that lovely beach, having a picnic (that’s when Toddy showed us how to make shredded coconut) then overturning the boat twice and losing a couple of Army outboard motors on the way home?
I had to pay for them!
I have just caught up with this particular site and would like to get in touch with you for old times sake. Ann,I and family were next door neighbours and friends in 2 PIR, Moem Married Quarters.
truely remarkable photos from the past.
Correction ,the Moem synchronised bike team at sepik river, it is actually at Hawain
River along the west coast
