I am searching for the photos of my late father Sergeant Kalai Kurumau service number 82681 served at Moem Barracks in 1950s till discharged in 1982. Can someone help me with a photo?
Please can anyone share some more old photos.
I’m very interested to old photos of 2RPIR.
Seeing the picture of the 2 men outside the Sgts Mess reminds me of a little tale Mum told me years back. My Dad was Sgt Peter McCormick and he was in New Guinea late 1950’s until c. 1971. He married Mum, Margaret McCormick in 66 and she was up there as well. I was born at the General Hospital in 1969. Mum’s tale ‘one night whilst Dad was down in Canberra on a course, she and another Sgt., were at the Sgts Mess and whilst a little tipsy she got him to swipe (Steal), a large carved Sepik Spirit Mask from the Mess’ which had long hung there’, and, to this day it still is in my possession (2025). Scott..
I have just been looking at the site before attending the reunion in October and some of these photos bring back great memories. I do remember swamping the army boat and losing the outboard motors (also a fruit cake which my mother had taken the trouble to send for my birthday). I would like to get in touch with Russell Jenkin who is in the photo with me outside the Sergeants’ Mess.
Toddy and Clapper Jenkins, do you remember taking an assault craft to that lovely beach, having a picnic (that’s when Toddy showed us how to make shredded coconut) then overturning the boat twice and losing a couple of Army outboard motors on the way home?
I had to pay for them!
I have just caught up with this particular site and would like to get in touch with you for old times sake. Ann,I and family were next door neighbours and friends in 2 PIR, Moem Married Quarters.
