The Chalkies: Educating an army for independence

Darryl R Dymock

Publication date: 1 September 2016

Former Chalkie, Darryl Dymock’s book, The Chalkies: Educating an army for independence, will be published on 1st September.

The book draws on the recollections of 73 ex-members of the Royal Australian Army Educational Corps (‘Chalkies’) and a number of accompanying wives who responded to an online survey Darryl undertook survey last year, as well as on archival and historical sources, to tell the story of the Nasho Chalkies in PNG 1966 to 1973.

As the back cover blurb says, it’s about the good, the bad and the unexpected, from the time of conscription, through the challenges of recruit training and vagaries of corps postings, to the varied experiences of PNG, and the return (or not) to civilian life.

An educational scheme which for magnitude, scope, intensity and enlightenment is without parallel in military history ~ Brigadier Ernest Gould

Dr Dymock has contributed substantially to Australia’s proud history of military service to Papua New Guinea and its people. … My thanks and congratulations for a job well and proudly done.

~ Major General the Honourable Michael Jeffery AC, AO (Mil), CVO, MC (Retd)

  1. Love the choice of green & red for the cover, and white for the title!
This is a truly great read and Congratulations to Darryl.
While meeting all the criteria for a scholarly book, it is also so entertaining! I enjoyed the quotes from the Chalkies about Army life, especially from the Chalkies I knew then or have come to know recently.
The colour photos of Chalkies at different Barracks, and outside the Barracks, give a snapshot of our memorable lives in PNG.
The List of all known Chalkies is a very useful reference too. Well done – this is a ‘must have’ book!

  2. will the book ” The Chalkies: educating an army for independence” be available as an Apple iBook?

    • Hi John
A good question. There are no plans at the moment to publish ‘The Chalkies’ as an iBook, but that may come further down the track.
If you’re in the Brisbane area, the official launch will be on 8 October at Avid Reader, West End, and you can book in on their events website.
      best regards
      Darryl Dymock
