  1. Dear Helen,

That man leading the pipes and drums band was the drum major by the name of James Aweni, Cpl at that time. I am the daughter of the band master at that time. My father was WO1 Tiuamoa Lewaraka. I’m Daisy

    • Dear Daisy
Thank you for that information. I needed confirmation that it WAS
James Aweni as he is from Barupu village West Sepik and while he survived the 1998 AITAPE TSUNAMI,some of his family did not.

I photographed him at the tsunami Memorial Day one year later and would like to send his family a copy of this photo. Can that be arranged somehow? Hope to hear from you Thanks Helen

  2. Martin, came across your photos by accident. A great collection and makes me wonder why I never carried a camera in my years in PNG. I am writing my story of early days as a helicopter pilot in PNG initially with Helicopter Utilities and the Crowly Airways. My first tour with Crowleys was at Tifalmin. There was amissionary station I think west of Tifalmin and a missionary nun whose first name was Betty. Any clues?

  3. Dear Martin Thank you for putting so many photos on line….I am particularly interested in the picture of the PIR pipe band as a Warapu man I knew when we were working in PNG as teachers was band leader for a period…I am wondering if you know if the man leading the band in this photo is named JAMES (can’t recall his surname) or if not can you identify the band leader…..thanks Helen
